VIU BSW Bursary Applications

The BSW program is offering 3 types of bursary/awards to 3rd and 4th year students. Each bursary is worth $5000 per year as a tuition credit.

Note: The number of bursary/awards available each year are contingent on available funding. Some bursaries may be offered for one year or two years.

Types of Bursary/Awards

Academic Performance

Awarded to the applicants with the highest GPA’s over 3.50.

Social Justice Award

Awarded to students who can demonstrate a commitment to social justice leadership and social activism and have made a significant impact on a community or social problem consistent with social work values. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Overcoming Adversity Award

Awarded to students who have encountered and overcome significant life challenges in their journey to their studies. Successful applicants must have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Important Criteria

Students:

  • Must be full-time students
  • Must be domestic students
  • Mst have no other full tuition awards
  • Can only be granted one award (up to 2 years)
  • Must maintain GPA (from Year 3 to Year 4) to maintain the award

How do you Apply?

Students must complete the application forms provided by September 15. They will be submitted to the Dropbox in the BSW Student Orientation site. No late applications will be accepted.

All applications will be reviewed by the Bursary Committee and students will be informed by email of whether they were successful by the end of September.

Students who are applying for the Social Justice and Overcoming Adversity Awards will be required to submit extra documentation of either (depending on the award):

  • Social Justice: A two to three-page written statement describing their activism, service and leadership as it pertains to a specific community or social problem, including specific activities, initiatives and how they link this to social work values and social change.

  • Overcoming Adversity: A two to three-page written statement describing the significant life challenge(s) they have faced and how they have arrived at the BSW program and how this has or will inform their practice.
