Frequently Asked Questions

The practical nursing program is a two year program with three semesters in each year. It includes theory courses, four consolidated practice experiences and one final preceptorship. Students must successfully complete all required courses in each semester before progressing to subsequent semesters and the final preceptorship.

The practical nursing program can be accessed at two different campuses: Nanaimo campus (Nanaimo, BC) and the Cowichan Campus (Duncan, BC).

The Nanaimo campus accepts up to 32 students each September and the Cowichan campus accepts 24 students every other September.

There are several courses that are required prior to applying:

  • General admission requirements apply.
  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent.
  • English 12 with a grade of "C+" or English First Peoples 12 with a grade of "C+"
    or VIU offers equivalent courses; ENGL 067 or English 115
  • Foundations of Mathematics 11 with a grade of "C", Pre-caluculus 11 with a grade "C", or Applications of Math 12. VIU also offers equivalent courses; Math 045 (part 1) and Math 046 (part 2) or Math 047
  • Biology 12 with a grade of "C".
  • HHPN 001 - (Human Anatomy and Physiology for Practical Nurses) with a minimum grade of "C+", must be completed before attending any Practical Nursing Diploma courses. Applicants may be granted conditional acceptance into the Practical Nursing Diploma program prior to successful completion of the required HHPN 001 course. Advanced credit for any course must be requested through either the admissions department or by contacting the Program Chair. Courses are examined for their equivalency prior to granting credit.

Yes. Our courses are taught utilizing a variety of different teaching and learning technology. You will want to ensure you have good computer skills and literacy.

Students are assigned 5-6 theory and clinical courses each term. All students move through the program together as a cohort.

Students are expected to conduct pre-reading and activities for every class. This may require 2-4 hours of additional study time each day. Additional time may be required to practice clinical skills in the lab and/or with the lab resource nurse.

No. When you have successfully completed your diploma, you must apply to the College of Licensed Practical Nurses to write a national licensing examination.
